  • Capacity Building in Mathematics and Its Applications

Call for applications for two postdoctoral fellowships tenable at any of the following five Swedish Universities: Linköping University, Mälardalen University, Stockholm University, The Royal Institute of Technology-KTH and Uppsala University.

Makerere University, with support from the Uganda-Sweden bilateral research cooperation, wishes to announce two postdoctoral fellowships in Mathematics for the Academic years 2018-2019/2019-2020. Accepted applicants will conduct their research at any of the five consortium universities. However, under special circumstances, accepted applicants may conduct their research in other universities. The research will be in both Pure and Applied Mathematics but with preference to Pure Mathematics. 

Each grant size is up to 160,000 SEK and is estimated to cover flight tickets, accommodation, and subsistence allowance for up to 8 months in Sweden. 

Eligibility requirements

  • The applicant must be a staff member of Makerere, Gulu, Busitema, Kyambogo or Mbarara University.
  • The PhD-degree should not be older than five years by the time of application.
  • Academic journal papers already published or accepted for publication should be listed in recognized mathematics databases, e.g., MathSciNet, zbMATH.

Interested applicants should submit the following sets of documents

  • An application letter for the postdoctoral fellowship.
  • A current CV (maximum 5 pages).
  • A copy of the current identity card or passport.
  • Three recent passport photos.
  • A softcopy of the applicant’s PhD thesis.
  • Softcopies of all journal publications of the applicant.
  • A research plan describing the research to be undertaken, not exceeding five pages including reference list.
  • An invitation letter from the group/researcher to be visited. The said letter should not come from the applicants former PhD advisor or group of researchers who worked with the applicant during his PhD studies. In any case, the applicant cannot be hosted in the same university where he/she obtained the PhD.
  • A letter from your Head of Department indicating that you would be strongly considered for leave for your 8 months stay in Sweden.
  • At least two recommendation letters from academic referees

Selection

The applications shall be vetted by a panel formed by the Department of Mathematics, team leader of the Sida maths project-316 at Makerere, coordinators from the universities in the consortium, and teamleaders of the Sida maths project-316 from Sweden. 

Report

A scientific report, endorsed by the host, on the outcomes and activities should be sent to the team leader for the mathematics Sida maths project-316 at Makerere University, Assoc. Prof. John Mango Magero no later than three months after the completion of the visit. All publications and manuscripts must be attached to the report. The report should also be disseminated at a scientific seminar at your home University. At least two publications are expected from the Postdoc.
