The Government of Uganda and Government of Sweden have renewed their research cooperation agreement for the next five years (2015 – 2020). The main objective of the bilateral research cooperation is to increase the capacity of Makerere and Partner public Universities to generate knowledge and promote research uptake for national and regional development.
The research programme will focus on institutional capacity building and human resource development in public universities in Uganda. Scholarships will be provided for staff graduate training at different levels including PhD degree (125) and Master degree (147), and Postdoctoral research fellowships (65) for Makerere University and the partner public universities in Uganda, namely Gulu University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kyambogo University and Busitema University.
The Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, Makerere University invites applications for Scholarships to the Master degree, PhD degree, and Post-doctoral research programmes for the Academic Year2015/2016.
Application & Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship
Category 1: PhD Scholarships for Staff from Kyambogo University (16), Gulu University (13), Busitema University (5), Mbarara University (16)
Funding is available for 50 Ph.D Scholarships targeting staff from the partner public Universities in Uganda. These scholarships are tenable at Makerere University. The general admission requirements of Makerere University will apply, however, other eligibility requirements include:
- A motivational letter
- Evidence of employment at the partner public University
- Evidence of study leave from the employing university (if applicable)
- Age limit preferably not exceeding 45 years (Females 50 years) at the time of application
- Female applicants are encouraged to apply
- Previous experience and knowledge in field of study will be an added advantage
Category 2: Master Degree Scholarships for Staff from Kyambogo University (25), Gulu University (25), Busitema University (25), Mbarara University (25)
Staff development scholarships are available for Master Degree programmes tenable at either Makerere University or any other partner public university in Uganda starting Academic year 2015/2016. The general application requirements of the prospective public University will apply, however, other eligibility requirements include:
- Evidence of admission to the Master degree programme at either Makerere University or any other partner public university
- Evidence of employment at the partner public University
- Evidence of study leave from the employing university (if applicable)
- Age limit not exceeding 40 years (Female 45years) at the time of application
- Female applicants are encouraged to apply
Category 3: Post-Doctoral Research Fellowhsips (30 fellowships)
Funding is available to support post-doctoral staff from Makerere University (25) and the partner public universities (5). The post-doctoral policy at the applicant’s preferred institution in the East African region will apply, however, other eligibility requirements include:
- PhD degree in any discipline
- Evidence of employment at Makerere university or partner public university
- Applications should be accompanied with a research proposal (Maximum 10 pages)
- A statement of motivation (Maximum 2 pages)
- Applicants should preferably have completed their PhD degree within the last 5 years.
- Female applicants are encouraged to apply
- The fellowship will last for two years
- A competitive financial package will be provided to cover direct Research expenses, consumables, minor equipment, modest subsistence allowace and travel to conferences
Category 4: Scholarhsips Under the Multi-Disciplinary Research Teams
Funding is available to support research training at Master degree (47), PhD level (79) and Post-doctoral research (35) under the Twelve multidisciplinary research teams (For detailed information on application and eligibility criteria, follow the Research Theme links indicated in the table and the individual Principal Investigator's contacts) .

Terms and Conditions:
- The scholarship will cover tuition and research expenses.
- The Master degree scholarship is for a period of Two years (Master of Medicine 3 years) and the PhD degree scholarship is for Four years
- Students already benefiting from any other study scholarship(s) are NOT eligible.
- A modest stipend will be paid to both Master and PhD students registered at a university other than the employing university
- The PhD students admitted on the sandwich model of training will spend part of their time in Sweden.
